Wood carving

       

    Wood itself is a fascinating subject. Wood carving often is the most direct way to make something useful and decorative out of wood. It has a long history with the unearthed wood fish from Yutao culture site, which dates back to thousands of years ago. Wood with close framework had been used for carving from as early as the Song Dynasty, such as box wood, savory wood . it was the introduction of hard wood to mainland that wood carving began to develop rapidly.

    Wood carving is divided into two kinds: technical and artistic woodcarving. Technical woodcarving has long history and intense traditional folk style. It focuses on elegant skill and wonderful artical excelling nature. It also includes two types: pure appreciative and practical woodcarving. The former means pint-sized separate artworks which are displayed on shelves, windows, tables and so on. The latter means to combine utility and art , using woodcarving for decoration, such as palace lantern, folding screen, picture frame, casket , etc. With the decoration of woodcarving, the whole of artworks is enriched and the art appreciative value is doubled.

    Artistic woodcarving means the works with refined design ,deep connotation, original creation, which can reflect the craftsman's taste view and artistic method as well as technique. The unique character of this kind is that it must combine the trait of wood to excavate the beauty factors from the form of raw materials, greatly embodying the gout of wood cutting and nature wood beauty. The represent techniques of artistic woodcarving are abundant and not stick to one pattern. Some are bold and resolute; some are engraved with special care with fluent line; some are simple and general with artful lending of natural beauty.
